Amazing, visually spectacular, exciting - words can't explain it and the pictures can't do it justice. What a truly wonderful experience. We were picked up at 2pm and driven to the airport where we joined our seaplane for a land takeoff. I had the co pilots seat and Gary, Allison and Greg were behind us. Allison and I were quite nervous but once we were up the in the air our nerves succumbed to the wonderful view. We flew over Derby, across the tidal mud flats and over King Sound and on to Talbot Bay. Our first sight of the horizontal falls did not disappoint. The tides here are enormous up to 12 metres,! We did a sea landing onto Talbot a bay and glided up to the pontoon of the houseboat, our base for the night. After being assigned our cabins and a safety briefing ( you don't want to fall in as there are sharks and crocs in the water) we were boarded on to the jet boat for a ride through the falls. Exhilarating. The sun was starting to set and the escarpment walls were stunning. The water rages through the small opening in the bay. We were then bought back to the base for a swim in the shark cage while they fed the sharks and the huge groper. Then back on the boat for a cruise up Cyclone creek. Magic. We were then cooked a wonderful BBQ barramundi and salad dinner.
We spent the evening having drinks and watching the sun finally set.
Our cabins were lovely, very modern and comfortable but it was an early breakfast at 6.30 and then another jet boat ride through the falls. The tide was higher this morning and running out instead of in. This is the highest that the tide can be for the boats to go through both falls. Back to the base and it was time to fly out, a sea takeoff - this time Gary in the co pilots seat and Allison Greg and I behind. Our trip back was 10 minutes longer than the trip up as we flew right out over the coast. This flight became a bit more nerve wracking as we all noticed the low fuel light warnings, on the left and right tanks were lit up. Obviously it was not a problem but it was nerve inducing, We all loved the trip and the 4 of us agreed it was a truly memorable experience.
